Seattle, Washington
[A small arena for a small wrestling show. April had some time to kill before she departed for WrestleWorld once again. There was a very small surprise independent show being planned by a friend of hers and who was she to say no to an invite to participate? The ring had just been assembled by the crew in charge of it and April was testing it out, seeing where the soft spots were, testing the ropes. Even doing a few backflips onto the mat as if she were conditioning herself for the pain to come. After a while she just laid there for a moment, looking up at the dimmed lights of the building.]
One of the biggest matches of your life is coming up. You know that right? So why the hell did you take this booking then? What if you get hurt during this match? This isn’t like doing a match for OWA or SSW, you knew those were happening and planned your schedule accordingly. What was with this impulsive shit? Why are you here April? Love of the game? Last-minute prep?
What is it?
For the longest time you really didn’t give a damn about the business. It was just about the money. Just a job. Just a little side hobby because you couldn’t stand the sight of a gun anymore. Now it’s in your blood. Four years, maybe five now? When did you start to give so much of yourself to wrestling?
When did you start to care so much?
You know you’re not going to be able to do this shit forever. You’re in damn good shape, but eventually your body will break down. All these bumps and bruises are going to add up. You’ve already had a few concussions and that problem with your knee. Is it all worth it in the end?
Yeah. Yeah it is. Wrestling brought you back from the brink. Wrestling saved you. Wrestling introduced you to so many people, so many places, even more than the military. And maybe you just like the idea of a fight where people actually stand up and go their separate ways in the end, huh?
Yeah…..
[The match that April was scheduled for put her against a Young Girl. The poor child was a trainee, barely old enough to be in the ring. But the Killer Bee didn’t show any mercy or pull any punches. She didn’t know how many people were in that arena, but she was happy to be standing there victorious in the end. There was nothing on the line except pride, but April wrestled just as hard against the young girl as she would any normal foes. Even though she wasn’t the main event of the evening, she was granted a chance to speak with the microphone in the ring.]
There are people in this sport who do things for themselves. And then there are people who do things for the sport itself. I know most of you know me from OWA, Strong Style Wrestling, DIVISION, WrestleWorld, EAW, whatever. Tonight, you all got to see April Song wrestling in her element, in the mud, without restrictions and without filters. I wrestle for you all and wrestle with the intensity and effort that you deserve. I wouldn’t be alive without pro wrestling today and pro wrestling doesn’t revolve around me.
I look at this girl that I wrestled tonight. She’s barely an adult, still growing, still learning. She is hungry, determined, completely grounded and focused. I appreciate fighting people like that because the people that I fight on WrestleWorld...they have forgotten that.
Claudia and Stephanie think that the wrestling world revolves around them, that it owes them something. Both of them are talented athletes, with gifts and experience that I can only dream about. I’m jealous of the fact that they started so young and I had to play catchup ever since I started out. It digs into my skin and into my heart that they are beloved figures, no matter how much they show of themselves. Claudia even gives this facade that she truly cares about her daughter, using her political and professional muscle to keep her out of WrestleWorld. For what? I’ve wrestled Roxy and to be frank I’ve worked up more of a sweat throwing her around then throwing her mom around. This isn’t a time for wrestling to be exclusive. We live in crazy times and if a girl wants to be crazy, let her do crazy things! Let her grow! Let her learn! She’s already proven that she deserves to be there.
Stephanie Matsuda believes that my world revolves around her. That I am something of a second fiddle to her. Even though the last two times that we have met in one of these rings, she couldn’t find it in her guts to beat me. I was robbed of the pleasure of choking her out once, and the other time I reached down into places so deep and so dark I can barely talk about them to finish her off.
But, in this three-way match I have coming up, I’m the underdog. These two are the most decorated, the toughest, and the strongest. There’s absolutely no denying that and I’m not going to pretend to. Even now, even facing those odds, I’m inspired to fight them even more. Both of them have a begrudging respect for my talent, but neither of them believe that I will actually topple them. They live so assured that little old April Song can’t touch them, that they are beyond my reach.
But I’m going to prove them wrong. And you people are going to help me.
[The crowd murmurs a bit in confusion]
I come to places like this to remind myself what it’s like to start something new, to start something with bold eyes and a set of guts. These people in the locker room, you people in the audience, you are the reason that people like me get to do what I do. Every one of you that I inspire, every one of you that get hope from wrestling...I fight for you.
So, I have to ask you all once and once only: Are you willing to stand with me, stand with these REAL wrestlers, the people who bleed and sweat for this and NEVER FORGET WHO THEY ARE OR WHERE THEY COME FROM…
ARE YOU WILLING TO SEND A MESSAGE TO STEPHANIE MATSUDA AND CLAUDIA MICHAELS: THAT EVEN THOUGH YOU RULE AS QUEENS, ALL IT TAKES IS ONE WELL-TIMED REVOLUTION TO UNBALANCE EVERYTHING!?
ARE YOU WILLING TO TELL THEM THAT THIS PLACE IS SACRED, THAT CHILDISH AMBITIONS THAT THEY HOLD HAVE NO PLACE!? ARE YOU WILLING TO TELL THEM THAT APRIL SONG IS LEADING THAT REVOLUTION?
[The crowd roars in approval as she calms herself]
There’s no more preparation for me to do. All that’s left is the fight. Thank you all for coming out tonight and enjoy the rest of the matches. As for me, I’ll be watching the rest of the show with a cold beer in hand. Then, I’m flying to Crown Coliseum and showing the two Queens what a LEGITIMATE ACE looks like.
THAT’S ALL!
