| IN VERONICA’S CABIN The place: in the Vessel deep inside Violet’s mind. The time? Well, who knows anymore? Ever since Violet created this place, I never really bothered to ask questions about how it all works… It just does. When one of the souls in the Vessel goes to the surface to deal with the real world, others like me are left to deal with each other. It’s brilliant, really, and it keeps all of the thoughts organized, it keeps everyone, Violet included, in check. It’s the only way for all the voices to not interfere with the one on the surface, or at least it’s the patch that we discovered upon learning more from each other during our time in Wrestleworld. I know. Took us long enough when the answer has been in front of us this whole time. We’ve spent so much time speaking to therapists and life coaches and abusers and bullies when the answer was inside our heads this whole time… We just all needed to agree to it. Time doesn’t really work normally in here compared to the outside world. Sometimes seconds take minutes. Sometimes a trip from the Vessel to the surface takes hours in here when it’s only a snap of a finger in the real world. The “switch” that used to be such an inconvenience to us, is now a second-nature skill because this time we actually see each other coming. It’s so boring to me, to be honest. It prevents me from pranking Violet, but that’s not really something I can’t live without. I wish nothing but the best, I suppose. So here I am, alone in my cabin. I have a walk-in closet filled with various bizzare and glittery outfits as I practice my walk in front of the mirror to make sure I’m doing things right. I grab four books from the dresser. I stole them from Dr. Valerie’s shelf earlier in the day, I’m sure she won’t notice. It’s a few of her smarty-pants books about brains and psychology and all of that boring crap. It’s a nightmare just looking at the covers. I can’t even imagine what kind of hullabaloo is inside. They’re better off contributing to what really matters. ?? : Veronica!I hear a familiar voice. It’s a sweet but annoying voice. Looks like sweet little Vera is here. I continue to do what I do and place the two books over my head.Ms. Veronica: Oh! Vera! What brings you here? Vera: Hmmm… Nothin’! Just enjoying the day… It got a little lonely in my cabin, so I decided to come to yours!I raise my arms up as my hands take one book each. I look like a goddamn weighing scale. A shaky one. But I try to maintain balance. Ms. Veronica: It’s not a good time to be here, darlin’... Hmm, you know what, maybe it IS a good time!Poor little thing is confused... but curious. Vera: So… What exactly are you doing?I smile at myself in the mirror. Veronica: Practicing of course! Kimberly said that confidence is key, and a confident walk can open doors to success!Vera: So umm.. The books?Veronica: It’s for balance and poise! Kimberly said that one must stand straight and not slouch, and you can only imagine how much dear Violet likes to slouch and lean. It’s horrendous! It looks lazy! It must be fixed!Vera: And what about lifting your arms like that carrying more books? Oh! Kimberly--Veronica: Kimberly said that the best way to practice your art is through discipline! You gotta suffer to achieve beauty and intimidation all at once! Vera doesn’t understand much, but she is in awe. Veronica: This could really, really help me become a model to jumpstart my acting career, Vera! It’s a win-win! Plus, you know that Violet is only going to do what she wants despite insisting that we need help, and I am here to make sure that help is going somewhere. I’m surprised. I stop myself from talking. I look in the mirror and see Violet herself next to Vera. She pats her back and leads her out of the room, and as soon as Vera steps out, she looks at me disappointingly, like I’ve just trashed her behind her back when I could have said the same thing with her in the room. Veronica: Didn’t expect you to be down here. I thought for sure you were manning the surface.I continue to balance the books while breathing steadily. Her looking behind me makes it so hard to focus.Violet: Is that it? You think I’d just ignore Kimberly’s advice? I didn’t even know that she didn’t get along with Lillie… If I had known, I would’ve tried to find another way.Veronica: Look, sweet pea. This is what I don’t like about Violet. She always doubts herself. She doesn’t trust her own decisions. She second-guesses herself very offten, and this is the kind of thing that turns us into failures. If that’s how the captain of the ship operates, then expect it to sink. I approach her to face her directly.Veronica: I love Lillie to death and we both agree to be reliable to her and go through this adventure with her, and I would never do anything to make her lose focus. As much as it pained us to get that third count in, we didn’t want her to get hurt too badly. But you have to face facts here -- ever since Kimberly came along, Colt has gotten a boost in his career. He was not only chosen for a Championship spot, but she aided him into becoming Champion. Trust me, and trust YOU… This is good for us. Violet doesn’t seem convinced. I care for her but sometimes I just want to punch her in the face so I won’t have to watch that worried look.Veronica: Now, we have a huge opportunity this Saturday night at the Wrestleworld Carnival. We get to face the Territorial Champion himself, MYOJIN. The crown-jewel of DOMINION. We get to tell the world exactly what we can do in the face of a huge competition like him. What do you think?Violet: He is scary. Not like fighting-machine scary but he seems like the type of guy who is head-over-heels in love with himself and the Championship only gives that narcissism the fuel it needs. He won’t go down. He can easily catch us off-guard.Veronica: Vie, we went through the Underworld and came out of that war in one piece. We went through a pretty-boy prince who hasn’t done jack shit, pardon my french, to prove himself worthy. We went through a ghost boy that couldn’t even walk through walls let alone scare anyone off. We went through a pizza boy who decided to become a murdering Barney Stinson to impress mommy dearest. We went through a rich boy obsessed with violence and casting us out of Wrestleworld. We have gone through injuries and we got hurt pretty bad but we are still standing because we refused to give up and chose to fight. Because we have a bright future in this company, whether anyone likes it or not, and we don’t want to give that future up even if some sickly malnourished piece of garbage they call the Territorial Champion gets in our way. MYOJIN can suck it. Good. She is lightening up. I can see that tiny smile on her face. Each passing day in this Vessel, my purpose is revealed to me more and more, and I learn more about what part of Violet I truly am. I’m the one that got us out of the asylum because I’m the only one that doesn’t break or lose control in the face of pressure and fear. I am her confidence and will. I say what she is afraid to say. And I will push her to walk the path of opportunities and challenges when she is far too scared to take a single step. Violet: Oh, and you should probably go to the surface soon. I wore the perfect Halloween costume for us. I figured I should come down to get you so that you can see it for yourself.Veronica: Are you kidding me? We’re dressing up? Oh, that’s fantastic! I hurry to a boat to get to the surface to see what Violet had for a surprise. Much as I’m happy about being able to talk to her without us pissed at each other, I still prioritize how good we should look for our main event match. Will it be a bloody vampire? A super-intelligent alien? A robot-girl? ON THE SURFACE I open my eyes. I’m finally here. And what’s this? Veronica: A f*cking angel.I take a deep breath to watch myself in the mirror with Violet’s outfit of choice. I walk away from the mirror to get a further view of myself. I hate its angelic white little dress that pretty much just covers half my thighs. I am too tall for it. I don’t like its fluffy wings. I’m not a fan of the white fishnet stockings. But it’s comfortable. It’s neat. And it’s Violet. I start to walk down the mirror again, pretending there was a crowd watching and my opponent is right there waiting for me. I am ready. I am walking with confidence and poise not just to this match, but to my future. Just like what Kimberly said. | |
