| Standing in God’s House Emmanuelle walked out onto the field in awe. She was dressed in a red jumpsuit, baseball cap and sneakers and a compliant mask. She had just arrived in Mexico City but she had to see it for herself, jet lag be damned. She had been in large venues before. The Crown Coliseum. The Tokyo Dome. Hell, she remembered the Rose Bowl as a child and college student. But standing on the hallowed ground of the Estadio Azteca, looking up into the mass of colorful, empty seats...she felt an excitement that she hadn’t felt in some time. She went to one of the empty chairs in the very first row, right where midfield would be when the stadium was configured for soccer. Never in all her time of slumming it on the independent scene, training with her crazy mentor Carlos, even the fights with Asakura did she ever imagine that it would lead to something quite like this. After a while of soaking it all in, she finally was snapped out of her thoughts by a phone call. It was Carlos.“Hey, Emmy. Made it safely out there?”“Yeah, landed down here a few hours ago. Just trying to take a few moments to myself.” “Cool, cool. What hotel are you staying in down there?” “I haven’t checked in yet. I’m actually at the Azteca now.”“Yeah, it’s quite a sight, isn’t it?” Emmy looked out at the empty stadium again. The construction of the set for Cero Miedo was completed save for a few superficial touches. She saw the ramp that she would be walking down before she defended her Shogun Championship, a broad smile forming under her mask.“Yeah, it’s something special, man.”“Just a quick story. That building that you’re in, it has meant a lot to my family. It’s meant a lot to people that I’ve helped mentor and train too. Last year, my little sister won back her World title. I was there to share that with her and we managed to reconcile after a rough time for a few years. I think April, who is wrestling in the main event for y’alls show, had a banger with Cloudy that same night. She washed herself of so much stuff that had bothered her in that ring. I’ve probably had a match or two in there but you know, Headlining the Tokyo Dome, main eventing AT&T Stadium, winning the greatest battle royal in wrestling history at the-” “I know, I know, I was there at the Rose Bowl when you won the world title. Blah blah blah.” “DON'T YOU BLAH BLAH BLAH ME, LIL GIRL! Look, my biggest point to you in all of this though is that the place where you're going to be wrestling, the place that you will be fighting in, it’s a cathedral of sport. It’s where Diego Maradona, rest in peace, made himself immortal. You have a chance to do the same, ya heard me?” “I know. I’m ready.” “That’s all I wanted to hear. Good night. Make yourself a legend.” “Night.” There’s not really all that much left to talk about. This is my second defense of this title and it will be by far my most important one. Beating Sakuya was important, very important. There will be other defenses, should I win, after this and they will probably be a big deal in their own way. But this is important. Arata made this belt a respected one as much as I knocked him, but I wanted to make sure that there was some new blood injected into the title scene. Apparently Rosanna wanted to as well. I didn’t bring this up before but it’s actually dawning on me that this will be the second time in a row that the Shogun title will be contested between two women and the first time in a WrestleWorld ring. That may be insignificant to some but to me it's a sign of a shift. Ever since this belt was conceived it belonged to just a bunch of macho men who wanted to prove how tough they were in their little circle jerk. Now, this belt is going global AND drawing out some of the best opposition available. That was my intention when I took the belt from the “Shogun”, to make this belt stand out. It apparently stood out enough to make a greedy belt collector masquerading as a religious fanatic to my door. I’m impressed that I have managed to live rent free in so many people’s heads. First it was the likes of Nathan Quinn who had the audacity to talk about my looks because he couldn’t figure out what to say against my wrestling ability. Arata disrespected me from the jump, even trying to treat me like a little sister. Hana, Sakuya, all these fucking joshi bitches trying to mock me. And now SPAWN says that I’ve disrespected them just by existing. It’s weird to me to have so much to say about someone they know so little about. That Shogun belt that I have, I earned. I put my body on the line just to earn a shot for it in DreamScape. I beat the best wrestler going in the world to win it. And I’ve defended it against a member of one of the most respected wrestling families in the world. There’s no bullshit around here that I can smell, ya get me? I kinda feel sorry for you, Roxy. You think that with your brother out there that you’re going to take this title that I’ve put so much energy into winning and revamping the image of. Prepare yourself for a fuckton of disappointment. On that field of dreams, on that very same ground where one of my best friends made her dreams come true, I’m going to turn your dreams and aspirations into a total fucking nightmare as I outclass you in front of the world. The Shogun Championship is in the most capable hands it ever has been and ever will be in. Thank you for your participation in my story and my life, but Mexico City is where you get off this ride, baby girl. | |
